CIRCUS MAGNET RESIDENTS PARTY

My first flyer of 2011 and thought I’d have a little fun with this one!

For my recent Circus flyers I have taken assets associated with the club, such as the dj’s, built the flyers by hand and then photographed them for the front of the flyer.

Every January, Circus host their intimate residents party in a smaller Liverpool venue. This year the party is being held in Liverpool's coolest underground club, ‘The Magnet’ on Hardman Street. The club has an iconic stage at one end of the dance floor so I thought it would be a fun idea to photograph the stage and rebuild it in my current montage style. The stage design features the ‘Funktion-one’ sound system from the club and one of Liverpool’s oldest buildings, ‘India Buildings’ which was designed by Robert Rowse.

Instead of using plain or coloured surroundings to photograph the stage like I’ve done with my more recent pieces, I went in search of a location that would bring the piece to life. I found exactly the right place on the surface of my kitchen table!

Due to ongoing complications at the Masque, Chibuku and Circus have moved their shows to a new venue just off Jamaica Street in Liverpool. The Camp and Furnace building, previously known as the A foundation warehouse is an amazing events space for Liverpool which will in time house bars, art exhibitions, music events and boutique events of every kind.

I had to design a new flyer for the events and decided to pop down and take some shots to use as the basis for the artwork. We wanted to keep it really simple and the warehouse image very prominent.

CREATIVE REVIEW DEC 2011 COVER

Creative Review visited my screen printing studio in November 2011 as they were writing a feature on the Liverpool creative scene. They really liked the recent flyers I had created for Circus and asked if I would be interested in designing the front cover for their December 2011 issue. It was a great honour as I've collected and admired the magazine since my university days, this is definitely one for the wall! The piece was designed using elements of the featured Liverpool artists work and then photographed.

Wasted Heroes also had a mention is this issue which I'll post shortly.

I'm extremely flattered that some of my tote bags are featured in a new book 'The tote bag' by Jetish Patel.

Here's a little about the book...

The tote bag is an eco product for this century, destined to replace disposable plastic bags. The canvas bag has become increasingly popular in recent years, as more people have become environmentally conscious, concerned about climate change and aware of the impact of their carbon footprint. The media reminds us all to be more conscious of the world we live in, and environmental issues are inescapable.

The tote bag artworks that are most striking, inventive, ironic and original have formed the basis of this book. Q1. How did you get in to designing clothes?

My background is graphic arts and I guess getting my designs onto t-shirts is something I’ve always wanted to do. I toyed about with the idea of setting up a t-shirt label for a few years and finally just decided to go for it, order all the equipment needed to screen print and get the label started. I love playing with inks and paints, so by printing everything my-self in house I can be really hands on experimenting with imagery and printing techniques. 

Q2. What makes Wasted Heroes different from other brands?

I try to keep my designs original and tend not follow what the majority of high street retailers are selling. When I first launched my store the more surreal and twisted designs seemed to get more interest over the simple graphical approach. This encouraged me to explore this kind of style a bit further and I now base the majority of my new designs on this trend. I have also tried to keep the label fresh by introducing t-shirts from guest UK based designers, by doing this I can offer alternative designs which differ to my style of prints.

Q3. Which one person would you like to wear your clothes?

That’s quite a tough one! I want to be realistic about it and not choose some ridiculous Hollywood actor who doesn’t really wear graphic t-shirts. I’d get more of a kick seeing someone music related, like one of the guys from the Foals or French duo Justice wearing one of my t-shirts.

Q4. What music are you listening to on your Ipod at the moment and why?

I can’t stop listening to the new Arcade Fire album ‘The Suburbs’. In my opinion they’re probably one of the best bands in the world and incredible band to see playing live. Their first two albums were amazing and this one has certainly lived up to the hype!
On rotation recently I’ve also been listening to Two Door Cinema Club’s debut album ‘Tourist History’ and the Foals’ second album ‘Total Life Forever’. Another popular choice for me this year would Jamie T’s ‘Kings & Queens’.

Q5. What does the future hold for Wasted Heroes?

At the moment I only sell my products through the Wasted Heroes online store and over the next year I would like to see them available in a few shops. I know some people still get a bit nervous about ordering clothing online and I would like it if they had a place to go try them on before making their purchase. It might be aiming a bit high for now but Urban Outfitters have an amazing selection of Graphic t-shirts and I think my label would fit in well in their stores.

CIRCUS VOL: 1

I've just finished the artwork for the first Circus cd mixed by Yousef and released on CR2.

It's a 3 cd pack showcasing the musical delights that have been at the forefront of the club night that Yousef has created over the last 8 years.
'Now (CD1)' is a stylistic snapshot of where the man and circus is at present, and an energetic and finger snapping one at that.
'Then (CD2)' is the make-up of tunes that have rocked both by guests, Yousef and his related ensemble of residents, suggested in part by the faithful who go on the clubs message board.

Really looking forward to seeing it back from print and having a listen.

Anton Powers was recently pictured in the studio at Cafe Mambo Ibiza wearing a Wasted heroes t-shirt recording his radio show.

NEW 'YES!' DESIGN

It might seem a little random but there is some thought behind this design.

I drove past a boozer when in Brighton and on a sandwich board outside was the word 'yes' in big letters.

I'm not sure if it had been wrote on purpose or someone randomly stopped to write the word on their way past.

It intrigued me enough to go home and design a t-shirt just with the word 'yes' on the front.

Now you can say 'yes!' to everything!

Circles of Mickey's is a dedication to Samo (Samo was the street name of Jean Michel Basquiat) and The Radiant One (The Radiant One is in reference to Keith Haring), two artists who where heavily influenced by the original street graffiti movement of seventies New York and inspirational figures to guest designer Framedink.

I have approached by a publishing agency who are putting togeather a book called 'The Art of British Rock: 50 Years of rock 'n' roll posters, flyers and handbills' and would like to feature one of my Circus flyers from last year.

The will be released in September 2010 and the Author is Mike Evans, a leading writer and broadcaster on pop culture and music.

Exciting times!!

Here's the book description:

Celebrating a half century of design in posters, flyers and advertising ephemera, The Art of British Rock highlights the UK s distinct contribution to rock n roll graphics. From customdesigned posters for provincial ballrooms in the late 50s to the computer-generated images of today, rock music illustration has reflected and influenced crucial changes in popular visual art. With classic examples (some unseen for many years) of key styles including pop art, psychedelic illustration, punk do-it-yourself and digital imaging, the book documents the stunning visual style of British rock from the era of the Beatles and Rolling Stones to the present-day art of indie guitar bands, cutting-edge soloists and contemporary hip-hop. I designed this flyer in January for the Circus February event and forgot to put it on my blog.
I've just redesigned it for the Circus Miami Winter Music Conference party and thought it would be the perfect excuse to get it on here.

I wanted the flyer to have a sense of movement and strong use of colours.

CHIBUKU TENTH ANNIVERSARY T-SHIRT

I've designed a limited edition 10th birthday anniversary t-shirt for Chibuku which will only be available for 1 month. The t-shirt is a screen print of the original Chibuku carton and features the birthday line-up on the back.
I brought back a Chibuku carton from the 2006 Lake of Stars festival in Malawi and took shots of me holding the carton in different angles.

Mercy Bearfaced t-shirt

I've just finished printing a Limited Edition batch of t-shirts for design agency Mercy.
This is the first in a series of 4. It was quite challenging but I had loads of fun experimenting with halftones and getting an affect that looked just like the original illustration.

STRAWHOUSES 'THESE ARE THE WILLING' T-SHIRT

I've been a bit slack lately with adding new t-shirts to my shop and will try my best to make up for it this month with some exciting new additions.

The first to go on is a t-shirt designed by Liverpool illustrator Paul Donnelly.
Paul is the vocalist/guitarist in the Liverpool band 'Strawhouses' and they've just finished recording their first studio album 'These Are The Willing'.
The illustration is part of their album cover and I love the rawness of the sketch on a t-shirt.

I've printed the design on a Gildan Soft Cotton t-shirt, which I can afford to sell slightly cheaper than my standard Continental t-shirts. I'm hoping to add more designs to the 'band merchandise' section of my site over the coming months, that are designed by local bands and club nights based in the Liverpool area.

I really love this design as it's both funny and twisted at the same time.

New T-Shirt designs

I've been hard at work this week getting some new designs ready for my site. Over the coming month there will be 4 new additions from myself and other exciting artists.

This is the first design which I hope to print and have up shortly.
At present it's untitled and was inspired by 1960's press ad's.
I created the face in illustrator and then had a play around with objects to contain it. I felt quite restricted using illustrator to create the swirl and obtained a better effect by printing the face on paper and then drawing the swirls by hand.

I like the simplicity of a black print on white and will also try the print on the soft yellow t-shirt that I have started to stock.

Chibuku Flyer

I've designed a new chibuku A3 folded flyer for their Sept to Dec dates and am really pleased with the final outcome.

I made a stencil based on the outline of the chibuku carton and spray painted it as the base for the flyer. I then worked over the top of it with strong lines and colours, bringing the carton to life.
I love going back to my art roots with projects like this and getting out the paints or spray cans.
You could probably create an effect similar in photoshop but that wouldn't be as much fun!

Circus September Birthday Flyer

Circus is back after it's summer break and I've just finished designing the new flyer.
I've kept the theme going of cutting a face into weird shapes and inserting objects from nature. They look strangely elegant and a little warped. Just what they like!

Banana Girl T-shirt

I've been playing about with the idea of merging human and animal parts together on some of the flyers I design for Circus. Another idea I had was to merge human body shapes and fruit together. I really don't know why but I decided an obvious match would be the top of a banana and the bottom half of a lady. I think it works!

I've printed it yellow on blue and will introduce it on an Olive coloured T-shirt in the coming weeks.

New Acid Tongue T-shirt design

I've just finished this new design titled 'acid tongue' and added it to my store.

It's a little crazy and a twisted style of illustration I tend to experiment in and have been told by friends it reminds them of the Rolling Stones tongue logo.

Although this was not my intention, I can defiantly see the resemblance and thats not a bad thing!

I am a huge fan of anything that comes out of Print club London.
Every year they have a show called secret blisters which gives you a chance to own a limited edition screen print designed by some of the industry's best designers and illustrators.

I bought a Jo Wilson print from them earlier in the year and absolutely love it and his work.
I was made up to find he had designed another print for the show and just had to buy it.

Irish t-shirts

Being an Irishman living in Liverpool has made me more aware of the lingo and dialog I use on a daily basis that only my fellow Irish countrymen may understand.
Last year on the run up to St Patrick's day I thought it would be a fun idea to start printing Irish sayings onto T-shirts and set up an Irish t-shirt shop called 'The Craics 90'.
